I'm really hoping to see some innovations in ADS-B at Oshkosh this year. Right now the best "really compliant" solution for LSA is looking like the Garmin GDL-84 for about $3500-$4000 plus install.

Big innovation from Dynon. In order to make the Dynon SkyView fully 2020 compliant they have produced a new GPS unit which will provide the better accuracy required by the FAA.

Simply remove existing GPS (and perhaps use it as a backup?) and install the new unit. Existing wiring and hardware will accommodate.

All this for $590 which I think is a pretty good deal.

To be fair the Skyview system requires the 261 transponder and is basically designed only for Dynon Skyview. But, if you included it in the Dynon Skyview, 261 transponder, and ADSB package the total price still only increases by $590 to be fully compliant

If Dynon can do this then surely Garmin will follow and the goal of more affordable 2020 compliant units is here!

I looked around a lot at Oskosh, and came to the conclusion that my previous assessment was correct. The best starting from scratch fully-compliant 2020 solution for me will be the Garmin GDL-84. It's a single box for ~$3500 that provides the certified GPS source, ADS-B OUT transmitter, and talks over WiFi to an iPad for ADS-B IN weather and traffic. The only downside is you have to use Garmin Pilot as the iPad app (not a problem for me, but others might like other apps).

Also, the GDL-84 reads the transponder squawk from many popular transponders, so once you put in the Mode-C squawk, it's also set the same for the ADS-B OUT component. Having to set two squawks would become tiresome.

I'm still hoping for more innovation before 2020, and lower FAA barriers to entry, but for now the GDL-84 is in the lead for me.

The little integrated Mode-C plus ADS-B in/out device with the display was very nice, but expensive at $6k-11k before install. It might work for some airplanes, but not for LSA unless it's Donald Trump's personal LSA. :)

Andy,

Did you check out the Navworx unit: http://www.navworx.com/navworx_store/Ex ... nsceivers/? Seems to be a couple grand less than the Garmin.

I was thinking more about their remote UAT boxes, the 1000, 2000, and 2500. :)

I didn't see navworx at OSH. They are cheaper, but also require entering the squawk in two places. If you get it wrong ATC will see two targets with different codes.

You can add the Transmonspe product for $200 that does the squawk sniffing like Garmin, Skyguard, etc.

The GDL 39 is 'in' only. The unit is compatible with the Garmin 796. To get 'out' in this configuration you will need a SV-XPNDR-261/262 Mode S xpndr or something like it.

If you are starting from scratch with glass consider the following current equipment for LSA and experimentals.

if Dynon Skyview Touch use the SV-ADSB-470 UAT Receiver (in), and the SV-XPNDR-261/262 Mode S xpndr (out). The Dynon SV-GPS-250 GPS source can be added as a primary or backup.

If Garmin G3x Touch use the GDL 39R ADS-B (In), and the GTX 23 ES xpndr (out). GPS is built-in.
