Off topic for LSA - medxpress busted?
I'm trying to fill out a 8500-8 (I know, not required for sport pilots) and it asks for your first/last name, but the field is not editable. It's shaded out. I tried in 3 different browsers. Any idea what I I am doing wrong?

Yeah I will be getting a private. All LSA with tricycle gear are too expensive and I'm not interested in a legacy taildragger.

That is cool - I didn't realize it was a tricycle gear. It must be the only Part 23 certified LSA that is tricycle gear, right?
I figured out the problem with the online 8500-8 form. You have to click on "Account" -> "My account", then re-submit your name. It wants to auto fill this info, but for some reason it couldn't find it, even though it was already there.

Ercoupe is not a part 23 airplane. It is certified under part 4A of the CAR's. This pre-dates the FAA and part 23.
There was also a STC for a tricycle gear conversion for the Piper J3.
A Quicksilver GT500 is another. It is certified under CFR 21.24 Primary category.

Re: Off topic for LSA - medxpress busted?
here is a list of the standard category aircraft that are LSA Compliant....... and a list of some that are not
https://www.eaa.org/en/eaa/aviation-com ... ft_listing
as you can see the Ercoupe 415-C and 415-CD would be LSA Compliant if unaltered, whereas the the 415-D, 415-E, 415F1, 415FA1 and M10 are not LSA Compliant
The ones that were non-compliant at birth can never be made compliant
The ones that were compliant at birth may have been altered to make them non-compliant (STC's etc) and can never be brought back into compliance

Any aircraft that meets the CFR 1.1 definition of a light sport aircraft is a light sport aircraft, regardless of the aircraft's certification.azsportpilot wrote:here is a list of the standard category aircraft that are LSA Compliant....... and a list of some that are not

Re: Off topic for LSA - medxpress busted?
looks like both lists have the same info
keep in mind some of these models were under-powered and STC's to retrofit a more powerful motor were popular
some of these STC's increased the useful load, and as a result the gross weight
these "improvements" would make that particular aircraft non-compliant

When dealing with a classic LSA it is always a good idea to get the FAA CD on the particular aircraft. A while back there was a fellow who had a Taylorcraft that once had controllable pitch prop. Even though the airplane appeared to be LSA the records proved otherwise because of a propeller installed sometime in the 1950's.azsportpilot wrote:looks like both lists have the same info

Re: Off topic for LSA - medxpress busted?
I had to establish an account on FAA MEDXPRESS to complete and submit the form. My memory is kind of fuzzy, but if I recall it was possible to retrieve a facsimile of that form, but not possible to fill it in without going through MEDXPRESS.pjcampbell wrote:I'm trying to fill out a 8500-8 (I know, not required for sport pilots) and it asks for your first/last name, but the field is not editable. I figured out the problem with the online 8500-8 form. I had to click on "Account" -> "My account", then re-submit your name. It wants to auto fill this info, but for some reason it couldn't find it, even though it was already there. Re-submitting it seemed to fix the problem.
