Re: Made The Leap To IPad
Nice! I had a full-size and it was a bit cumbersome. The Mini is perfect. I don't use my iPad/ForeFlight much for local flights, but it's absolutely in the bag for any trip outside of my home area.

Re: Made The Leap To IPad
Hope you enjoy the iPad.
If you ever feel frustrated by the "walled garden" approach Apple takes, it often helps to just take a deep breath, relax, and try doing it the Apple way. After initial reluctance, you may find it works pretty well.
As an aside, I recently pulled 19,000 (!) photos out of iPhoto and uploaded them to the new Google Photos, which has unlimited storage for free. This is one of many instances where others have elegant solutions, and Apple "allows" it, going to far as to approve the new Googke Photos app.
BTW, I think a good case is imperative, and I've had good luck with Otterboxes, though I use a more streamlined case around the house.

Re: Made The Leap To IPad
I just switched to an iPad mini. wingX Pro 7 is free for CFIs so I've started on the learning curve to understand new HW and SW. I like it, but have not yet become comfortable with it.

SportPilot, I think you'll really like it. I'm not an Apple FanBoy at all, but it's hard to beat the iPad for aviation use. iFly is a good choice. I run Garmin Pilot, only because I like the less cluttered vector maps instead of using a sectional view. You really can't go wrong with any of the popular apps, it's all just personal preference.
BTW, I use a full-size iPad and love it for the larger screen, but it does not fit every situation or cockpit.
Enjoy!

Andy -- iFly has a nice Vector map view. You might give it a try when your Garmin subscription lapses.MrMorden wrote:SportPilot, I think you'll really like it. Thanks...if iFly has a free trial I'll try it before then!dstclair wrote:Andy -- iFly has a nice Vector map view. BTW, I use a "cheap" Poetic case as well, it works well. I find the iPad really just needs something to hold on to (it's pretty slippery on its own). Don't drop it and it will be fine. With the commodity pricing of consumer electronics and their 2-4 year replacement cycle, I can't stomach spending $60-80 for a case.

Re: Made The Leap To IPad
Cautionary tale:
I've always used Otterboxes and they've protected my devices well.
Karen got an iPad Air2 for her birthday in January. She thought the Otterbox was a bit clunky for her tastes. We found a nice magnetic case online, similar to the Apple offering but less than half the price.
Long story short, the prop blast from the Sky Arrow blew it off a motorcycle seat onto the hangar floor. Landed right on the "sleep/wake" switch which is now inoperable. All Apple could offer was a replacement at over $300. They did show us settings in "Accessibility" that let us emulate it's function for now. Eventually, we'll get it fixed - third party repair shops estimate the cost at about $135.
These devices are pretty darn fragile and do need some protection.

Personal choice -- cases can be equated to insurance. Get the amount that you need.
I've never put my iPads or iPhones in cases. I buy these devices for both the functionality and design. A case changes this for ME. I do consider them as disposable devices and I'm not overly concerned with replacement or repair costs.

Re: Made The Leap To IPad
Exactly how I do it. I throw the empty iPad case behind the passenger seat until I'm done flying.SportPilot wrote:When I get in the airplane, I pop the tablet out of the Poetic cash and put it in the RAM windshield mount. As soon as I land, it comes out of that, back into it's case, then into my flight bag.
