Interesting clouds in N GA today

Post by FastEddieB »

To set this up...

1) We live in a valley, so from the house only see a bit of sky.

2) We live in Fannin County, GA - "Gateway to the Mountains"

In any case, walking the dogs up out of the valley today I looked south towards our house and saw this:

I wish I had a time lapse. It was weird in that the wind was blowing pretty strong from the west, right to left, and the whole body of the cloud seemed to be moving that way. But over a period of about 15-20 minutes, in spite of the apparent motion, it remained stationary. Hence I think it was probably a standing lenticular formation caused by the rising terrain.

5,000' winds (elevation about 2,000')

Hard to see, but there were little "wavelets" forming on the upper edge:

Which, over time morphed into this:

Note that though a lot of time had passed, and the structure of the clouds had morphed quite a bit, the overall position was still about the same, looking at the tree at the bottom - in spite of the strong westerly winds. I don't know what the orb at the bottom is - probably a reflection.

Clouds like that usually portend turbulence, and sure enough:

A couple of hours later the whole thing has just spread out to pretty much cover the sky.

Anyway, I thought it was cool and it passes for excitement 'round these here parts!

That was mentioned on another forum, to which I responded they had probably arrived to sell us vapor ware.

It was lame then, and its lame now - yet I somehow can't resist.

Thanks!

Again, if I had had a tripod with me a time lapse would have been way cooler. The churning and churning without actually moving was kinda impressive.

Probably need to come up with something I can throw in my Camelbak - I have a few lying around and just need to cobble up a tripod mount for my Otterbox case.

I'll bet Eddie has taken up with a UAS wench and that picture was really a party gimmick to celebrate release of the new rules for 500 ' flying.

Charlie Tango,
I'm sure you're right ! the other possibility is that some working wife decided to put a UAV up under the new rules to watch her husbands' activities while she is earning the bacon. UFOs are too old hat for today. All the Aliens have examined us and found our society unfit for exploitation.

Nice topic Eddy. Are you doing any cross checks with weathermen to provide comparative analysis with your conclusions ? I live in a valley location in Northern Pa. and watch for things I might recognize too. Unfortunately, I'm not a real weather wizard and can't make much out of my observations. I do use the "top of the knob" in back of my house to try to estime ceilings at my airport. Mostly, like today it is easy enough to see the snow falling and not have to worry about forecasting.
