Bose A20 - wind noise / open cockpit

Post by mcurcio1989 »

Anyone have experience flying the A20's in an open cockpit or with the doors off? I have heard that they are not effective with wind but what I want to know is if this means they don't really block out wind noise actively, they are actually substantially worse at blocking wind noise passively, or perhaps even exacerbate wind noise compared to your average pnr headset.

I'm not talking about totally open full force wind in your face. More like full windscreen but no doors - like a sea ray with the canopy slid back.

Related... A couple of different headsets; a couple of different airplanes. Not all airplanes, not every time.

Upon climb out, at full throttle, squelch is overcome, engine noise overcomes all received broadcasts. I don't think I am broadcasting.

Has anyone ever seen this?

I'm thinking engine RF is triggering squelch. Thoughts?

I won and Ercoupe and use the Bose A-20. I have not noticed any wind noise with the windows down.

Sorry, that was 'own' an Ercoupe. I only wish I had won it!

Well I bought a (used) pair for what seems to be a pretty good deal so I'll report back how they work out. Worst comes to worst, I don't think I'll be out anything if it turns out they just don't fit my MO and I decide to sell them.

You just need the mic muff cover kit that Oregon Aero sells for open cockpit planes. Got them for my Searey.
