Worst Place to be a Pilot

Post by Jack Tyler »

For those who haven't found it yet, I recommend watching the first episode of this series to see what you think.

Produced in 2013-2014 for British TV, it's about Suzi Air, a rapidly growing Indonesian airline, and more specifically it's many low-hours ex-pat pilots who must learn to deal with very demanding weather and airfield circumstances. I'm not a fan of reality TV in general and the aviation programs it produces, but this strikes me as both highly entertaining for pilots and also more genuine. It's also interesting to see how many of the 'basics' of airmanship play key roles in safe flying, despite the conditions being so unique and challenging. It is astounding to me that pilots with <300 hours PIC are hired given the flying involved, but one of the programs does illustrate their training program thru the experience of a young Isle of Mann ex-pat who shows up. Seeking ex-pat pilots is understandable given that Suzi Air has grown very quickly and Indonesia doesn't have much of an indigenous pilot training pipeline, but 'Wow!' what an introduction to flight pay.

A 4-part TV series is pretty typical in the UK. So far, I've not found any indication that Channel 4 or another outlet has commissioned a follow-on Season, but I hope it happens. This link gives more info on Suzi Air: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susi_Air

I have been watching that series. I tried to share it with other pilot friends but none seem interested. During the first show they mentioned that some of the pilots only had about 300 hours. But when I went on line and looked up Suzi air they stated they were looking for pilots with 700 hours.
