Re: Woman Struck By Drone At Mall
At what point did remote control toys become 'drones'? Where is that line drawn now?
Remember the Cox powered planes the 'big kids' and some adults used to fly on weekends usually at the local school practice field? They would buzz like a POed hornet and belch blue smoke. Looked like a lot of fun, except when they crashed and you know either a lot of building time or money (or both) was destroyed. Are these toys now the dreaded drones that has everybody's knickers all bunched up?

You are right, the media seams to call anything that is remotely piloted a drone. It is sad, because those of us who fly models for a hobby are getting a bad wrap.Merlinspop wrote:At what point did remote control toys become 'drones'? Where is that line drawn now?

I spoke up at an event that I was not participating in once, because they were flying the models over the crowd because of the wind. Flying models over and around people is just not a smart thing to do. Radio control models can do bodily harm and should not be considered toys.

'Tis true... The FAA's batting average lately has been disappointing in the eyes of almost every aviation group (aka: 'customer'), with drones just being one example. I can see one major reason why: the rate of change in areas impacting aviation. From pilotless aircraft to cockpit technology to consumer technology adaptable to the cockpit to increased amateur build choices to the impact of global aviation business transfer, it's a bountiful list of change agents. The pokey ol' FAA just does not seem to own clothes suitable for the party.
