Re: NY to CA!
One of my friends just commented on the Route 10 option, "Don't go in the Winter though."
The whole idea of doing this cross country in the a Winter is to escape the Winter!
Or is that a bad idea?
Is it possible to do this trip safey and happily in the Winter?
Or am I going to go through so much Winter hell to get to CA that it defeats the purpose?
I always flew locally in NJ and MD in the Winter.
No long cross countries, but I never had a problem with Winter flying...
as long as the plane is in a hangar!

Its a crap shoot. You could be delayed on either route. The direct route might be quick and scenic or not.
Re: NY to CA!
Just one point of information: The Route 10 path puts you near the southern US border for long periods. That might make you a target for a CBP ramp stop of the kind we have seen recently. Not saying you should not do it, just keep it in mind and have your responses to over-eager law enforcement prepared in advance.

I'd suggest starting out S/SW towards Greenville, SC then to the Dallas area, angle towards El Paso until you hit the I10 corridor then on to CA. Around 10% longer than a direct route but gets you to warmer climates in the first 500 miles and avoids mountain crossings. Can also stop in on the Georgia contigent of SPT
