I came across this historic video of when John Wayne was working for the Civil Aeronautics Authority (forerunner of the FAA) and was giving a check ride to Robert Stack. It was the worst check ride since 1903 when Orville hit a sand pile.

Slapping Robert Stack was bad, But also during the check ride JW had the nerve to confiscate a passengers handgun (though he did return the weapon to its' owner after landing).

He should have deputized the gunman to stand behind Robert Stack to give him a little more guts.
Geeze. The movie ends and the mechanic yells THERES ONLY 30 MORE GALLONS OF FUEL!
30 Gallons of fuel will take me from Portland Oregon to Los Angeles! So he had plenty of fuel by my standards. (BTW, I was only slapped ONCE in my check ride and Stack got slapped twice. Therefore I'm a better pilot than Stack.)

30 gallons in a DC4 will let you fly for about seven and a half minutes at cruise power...
"Someone already thought of that."
