Amen. Maybe without the stress of caring for dad that might be doable. On the other hand, unlike dad I don't have anyone to care for me, and smoking would insure I don't make it to an age that requires care, lol. I'm kidding, but not completely. I have smoked for 50 years.

I second SportPilot's advice.

I feel funny giving it unsolicited, as if the smoker didn't already know how bad the habit is. I go through this whenever I see my daughter smoking.

Then again, after hearing it enough times, maybe my chastising is the one that makes a difference.

Key: if you don't expect quitting to be that big a deal, it likely won't be. Go into it thinking it will be hard, and you may face a self-fulfilling prophecy.

But we're all adults, and we all have to live with our lifestyle choices, for better or worse.

Oh, and good luck with your dad.

Bob, I have a friend & colleague who flies a 172 out of his 6500 elevation airstrip. Of course, its condition - and so his plane's ability to accommodate the landings - is something he has control over. Many, many airstrips in interesting places exist. Finding an a/c that can slip into and, much more importantly, get out of ALL of them really isn't the goal. That's more about putting notches in the gun handle. I'm sure a lot of aircraft are capable of giving you lots of pleasure. Job ! is to get going. Charlie Brown always used to (and probably still does) say: Starting is the hard part.

Kudos to my new friends Fast Eddie and Sport Pilot for the push to quit smoking.

Jack, as for starting is the hard part, not at all, I'm really looking forward to getting all my ducks in a row. I have no doubt I want to fly in my retirement but at the present want to stay close to dad for daily visits. When dad is no longer around I'll move to an Arizona Air Park, chat up my new neighbors for a CFI (who knows, maybe a neighbor might be an instructor) and get busy with lessons that hopefully will be in a new to me, used plane that I bought.

BTW, I couldn't find where Canada is allowing US Sport Pilots in their airspace.

Thanks to all for the assistance and suggestions.

I think this is another case of mixing terms. Light sport aircraft are allowed, sport pilots are not.

Bummer. Back to considering the glider license.
