Idea

If you have a few bucks to spend...

Go to Davis Island in Tampa, to Peter O'Knight airport. Go for a lesson with a CFI. Tell him you want to do a circuit around Tampa Bay, overflying the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, Clearwater, St. Petersburg, Albert Whitted Field (Towered), then overfly MacDill AFB on your way pack to TPF.

You will enjoy and it will take about 45 minutes.

Just be wary of the Airspaces and cloud clearances.

I'm in St. Pete / Treasure Island...yeah I saw the fantasy of flight thing from the highway on my way to st. pete from sanford (took the auto train)...needless to say the connie and the dc-3 sitting in the field caught my attention...I was too busy looking at the connie to pay attention to the sign and didn't really see what it was all about....I've got a couple of votes so far for that I probably won't be able to swing that though because I would have to do that on my way back to sanford and scheduling might not work...i'll look into it though.

 I can probably count the amount of clouds I've seen on one hand. Reminds me of when I lived in tucson. And judging by the amount of GA flying over the house I'd say airspace isn't much of an issue.

Tampa ARSA

Post by bryancobb »

The Tampa ARSA, OOPS, I mean Class C, and MacDill is a little intimidating if you haven't flown around there some.

A Peter O CFI would make sure that you can be where you are.
It will be a fun ride you'll always remember.

I got my private license out of Peter O in 1985 while I was stationed at MacDill, in the Air Force.

MacDill is a ghost town now. We had 130 F-16's and 4 Fighter Squadrons back then.

Funny

One funny thing about getting initial pilot training in Florida???

I used lakes as check points on my first solo cross country. LOL
My CFI saw it coming but let me go to teach me a lesson!

When I got out of my familiar area, I looked forward toward my checkpoint and there were only about a MILLION lakes!!

I stayed lost for hours. I stopped at 10 or 12 airports that I had no idea where I was. LOL

Eventually I made it back to TPF. For my next XC, my CFI said "Why did you not use a single lake as a check point this time?"

I just grinned at him. He busted out laughing. Warren Slagle. Whatta Guy!
