The GPS attached to the Stratux is only necessary for it's AHRS feature to work.

Stratux will supply traffic and weather info even if your EFB is using some other source for GPS.

The Stratux uses an AHRS module, $15 from Amazon, for AHRS. Without the module, it can simulate AHRS using GPS, but not very well.

I have an iFly GPS, and when it sees the Stratux GPS is automatically uses that GPS instead of its internal GPS. This has never been a problem, but I wish I could override it and force the iFly to use its own GPS all the time.

Remove the GPS from the Stratux.

I should try that and see if my iPad Mini 4 GPS is sufficient.

Just flew to Monroe County with Karen for their monthly breakfast.

1) Saw 3 low level targets on my phone in 17 miles, was only able to visually acquire one.

2) No loss of either traffic or FIS-B weather without the GPS antenna attached. Both my iPhone and iPad have built-in GPS, so it’s probably redundant.

3) I haven’t used my iPad Mini in the plane in ages. My iPhone X seems adequately large.

ADS-B traffic and weather use the two antenna connected to your Stratux for 978 and 1090. The GPS puck is for GPS location only. It's good to know you are getting a good GPS signal with your iPhone. I never thought about ditching the GPS puck, but it would make things simpler and one less wire. Of course, this is also an option:

My flying over the last 12 years has been almost exclusively in my Sky Arrow. In that, the iPhone or iPad have an open view of the sky through the canopy. The internal GPS’s also worked fine in my Cirrus. I suppose in an aluminum plane they might struggle, depending on placement.

I use a RAM windshield mount in the SkyCatcher and Remos. My iPad is almost, but not quite, as far forward as my GPS puck. It will be interesting to see if, and how well, it works with just the iPad internal GPS.

IPad internal GPS has been dead nuts reliable for me. It’s never dropped connection or lost positional accuracy.

Uggg... I'm in the process of installing a GDL 82 in my Sky Arrow... or so I thought... According to the install manual, the GDL 82 CANNOT be used with a mode "S" transponder... which the previous owner had installed.

Anyone else have any info on this?

Add the ES (extended Squitter) to your mode S transponder.

That is correct Pete, you cannot install the GDL-82 with a mode s transponder. Sell it and buy a used GTX-327 for about $400-$500 and then install the GDL-82. You'll recoup your money and then some by selling the mode s transponder. What transponder do you have?

This alone will not get you ADS-B out compliant for 2020, you still need a certified WAAS GPS position source to feed your position into the the transponder. This would be an additional expense on top of the $1600 ES upgrade (assuming a Garmin 330) unless he already has a WAAS compliant navigator in his plane.

I have the GTX 330 - non extended squitter, and do not have a waas source.

So... backwards as it seems, I may be best to downgrade to a GTX 327 sell the mode S then go ahead with the GDL 82.

I'm wondering if going from the 330 to 327 means a tray swap, or is it a "slide in and go"? (edit no, not slide in & go)
