Re: 2014 Bristell crash, Lakeland Linder Rgnl (KLAL)

Paul: I think your predictions are in order. I have noticed a lot of the left turning tendency even during engine idle flare and most pilots do not correct for it. Until you have done them, it is hard to fight the PIO's and we tend to chase them trying to 'save the landing'. I always urge students t...

I won't be up, but I'll keep an eye out for the Red Nose position light

FULL MOON!

I guess the gravity of the moon is greater when it is in sunlight? Does that mean our airplanes are a little lighter during a full moon?

Re: Chute or Free Fall

weight... Ultralights are allowed to have them but FAA does not consider them to count against the 252 weight restriction. It dors count  against the Gross weight if one is specified. Of course they are unregulated so that’s up to you :D Speculate? If LSA’s could get the same pass would use...

Chute or Free Fall

AOPA puts little quizzes in their Aviation eBrief's from time to time. A recent one was, " If there were No limitations, would you equip your aircraft with an airframe parachute? " The 'Yes' were 54% 'No' 41.4% 'I got one's' 4.14% I was really surprised at the high percentage of those that...

Re: Emergency Descent

Just a reminder about Load Factor.

Many LSA's have their Load Factor cut in half once you add flaps. That should be a consideration depending on the conditions at the time.

I think I am going to stop posting here. My values are far different than most here and my "more liberal" viewpoints are at odds with most here. Expressing my opinions and views here is little more than pissing in the wind. I've tried to leave before, but keep getting sucked into threads ...

Re: Emergency Descent

Interesting. ACS/PTS only mentions 45 degree banks. I would stick with that, as going to the 60 deg. Is flying an emergency in a seldom practiced maneuver (my opinion). Rudder only  I favor ALL turns/ corrections to be made with coordinated inputs. Again, my opinion. Still all are interesting...

Re: what can I use for a rental plane

That is a good summary of risks.

If you can break even on a leaseback, you are doing well. But if there is an incident or two, it won’t turn out well.

Even the wear and tear would drive me up the wall. Upholstery cuts, dented skin, scraped wingtips... You get the idea.

Emergency Descent

Curious as to what others teach in this area? Most LSA POH are not much help. My thinking is that there are 3 basic scenarios involved... Airframe intact but get on ground fast. Weather related, get below clouds. Airframe probably compromised get down without down without losing more. Others? Though...

Re: Insturment Training

Good thoughts. While a Turn/Slip or Bank and Turn indicator are gyro instruments and would fit the bill, I have seen one or two LSAs the didn't have any gyro and no EFIS/GPS that you could use as an alternate. I would go with the equipped aircraft as several are available in my area but I was curiou...

Insturment Training

As we have established, a minimun amout of instrument training is required even for a Sports Pilot student to meet the 61.93 (e) (12) cross country requirements. Question is, what to do if only training aircraft doesn’t have any gyro instruments. Just mag compass, airspeed and altimeter? Throw cell ...
