Re: Icon, the good the bad and the ugly.

I've hear a rumor that some of the mangers in Icon came from the original Eclipse company. Any truth to that?

I usually get a DUATS briefing for even local flights. I like to be on the record, even when it's a Sunday morning 'clear and million' set of touch and gos. I also will always file a NASA report if I suspect I screwed up in any way that ATC or other authority figure might have noticed, no matter how...

The FCC rule applies to everybody, you can't use a cellular device airborne. Now if you have a GPS antenna that would be fine. I was under the impression the iPad was being used with the built-in location services, which uses the cellular tower network. Those iPads that are cellular capable have a ...

I'm glad your 'FD speed guage' helped you land without your iPad. I do wish you would change your nick, Mr ussyorktown. The USS Yorktown is a proud ship with a history legacy. It is a proper name and should be written with appropriate capitalization. It should not be used as a lower case nick on the...

Well that clears things up. You're such a macho manly man that the normal laws of aerodynamics just don't apply to you.

The FAA identifies five of the most dangerous hazardous attitudes found in accident pilots:
1) Invulnerability
2) Anti-authority
3) Impulsivity
4) Mr. Macho
5) Resignation
Respectfully speaking Mr Ussyorktown, you are exhibiting at least 2, possibly three of them.

I'm not very knowledgeable about LSA airplanes, but isn't it really the case that many, perhaps most of them, are routinely flown above the 1320 pound LSA weight limit?

There are hundreds of examples over the years of crashes in which a medically certified pilot was found to have taken inappropriate medication prior to an accident flight.

Let's be careful not to overstate the benefits of medical certification.

Lots (and lots) of GPS-related boxes out there, ... Bottom line: 9 hours each way with primary nav through the iPad worked well. I never missed the paper charts. I wouldn't do this in IMC. Even in VMC, I wouldn't want to rely on the iPad if I didn't have a separate aviation GPS onboard... On an IFR...

I haven't heard of an LSA or Glider pilot dying at the controls.

Does that happen often?

The CFI in the fatal accident above had the following qualifications according to the NTSB: The flight instructor held an airline transport pilot certificate, and was a certified instrument flight instructor for single and multi engine land. According to the latest flight instructor history form pr...

This instructor wasn't totally insane because he probably didn't actually kill his engine trying to practice a turnback, and he probably didn't start the self-created emergency until at least 900 feet. But he was insane enough to kill himself and his student. CAUSE: The flight instructor's improper...

Re: hOw!!!!

If I saw this happen first hand I'd for sure ask the pilots to give me one good reason why the decided to put everyone at or near the airport at risk with their stunt. If I didn't get a reason better than what I'm hearing here I'd talk to the flight school owner (if one was involved) and/or the airc...

Re: hOw!!!!

You still haven't proven that what he did was careless or reckless. It could have easily been done in a location that the engine not restarting would still have allowed for a landing in a place that doesn't endanger persons or property. I don't have 'prove' anything, I'm just pointing out the insan...

Re: hOw!!!!

Any pilot who would self-create such a serious emergency should be grounded permanently. Why? Please tell me exactly what regulations were violated and how you know they were violated. Sec. 91.13 — Careless or reckless operation. (a) Aircraft operations for the purpose of air navigation. No person ...
