Re: Experimental for training?

You can certainly use an experimental aircraft (either ELSA or E-AB) to earn your SP rating, as long as it conforms to the restrictions that define LSA in FAR 1.1. At this point, experimentals can't be rented out by flight schools, and CFIs can't use them to provide instruction for hire. There is a...

Re: GPS in Flight

With GPS it's simple, you can even set it up on a computer before hand and then load it into a tablet. Just follow the thin pink line! The tricky part is when you live near a military installation that will conduct "GPS Interference Testing" on a regular interval. I live near Fort Polk, a...

Re: Pole Barn progress!

Just FYI if you even see that grey plastic stuff, RUN AWAY it's horrible, I spent many an hour pulling it out of houses. Oh, yeah! I lived in a rental that had that stuff. It failed. It's amazing how much water can come out of a 1/2in open pipe in a few seconds. It happened during a winter storm so...

Re: Camara Mounting

Paul Bertorelli over on AvWeb did a video some time back, maybe about a year ago. I'll let folks google it if interested. Other than all the clamps for struts and such, his preferred method was taping the mount (not the camera) to the wing. He didn't use duct tape but something similar but more reli...

Re: Jabiru SP Vs D

You probably need to find a Jabiru specific board to ask about the engine issues. It's all about when it was made (the design has changed over time) and how it was maintained (there were some modifications). One guy at our airport had 3 catastrophic in-air failures of Jab 3300s in the same air frame...

Re: Speaking of oldies and goodies!

They cleared me to fly up the river. I advised negative transponder, negative encoder and they said fine, fly up the river and report College Park in sight. I was probably around 2,000' and had quite a nice view of the Capitol, Washington Monument and the like out my left wing. Really sad how thing...

Re: Speaking of oldies and goodies!

Eddie, have you been back to Collage Park since your unfortunate oil analysis? It's the oldest continuously operated airport in the US. The Wright Bro's taught the Army how to fly there. After 9/11, emergency services flew out there just to keep it operational and open to maintain that record. For t...

Re: Engine/motor

This discussion reminds me of the Tesla. It's a great car (I think), but it doesn't seem like a lot of people are willing to pay a high price for a great car with a limited range. They are getting better, however. My oncologist has a model S and paid $250,000 cash in advance for one of these to be ...

Re: Engine/motor

Just so you know the FAA didn't make those rules. It was the LSA committee members which included the EAA and AOPA along with aircraft Mfg's, engine Mfg's and other interested parties. There used to be about 150 of them. Probably not that many any more. Blame your peer's and not the FAA. In general...

Re: Quattro cruiser

One day we should probably all get together in some neutral location with our planes and collectively decide once for all which one is the uber-LSA :D Some of us routinely do just that at Sport Aviation Expo in Sebring every January. Don't know if that's ever changed anybody's mind, though. My unde...

Re: ADSB-B in and out

So far , the shops I been talking to work on upgrading certified planes with price tags ranging from 50k up ... this sort of work I need is a waste of time for them. I need to find some smaller operation , somebody like 3Dreaming but who is willing to install avionics :D Try some places as smaller ...

Re: AVweb Video on Vashon Ranger + Aviation Consumer Article

I think it's interesting that the designer worked for Vans. This looks for all the world like a high wing RV. From the castering nose gear to the internal bracing, it sort of screams RV to me. This is fine, RV's are great planes. Personally, though, I think the weight is a problem, especially for f...

Re: Sport Pilot DPE shortage

Well, folks, I had hoped I was home free - but apparently, not quite there yet. The last step in the DPE certification process is to have an FAA inspector observe me doing a practical exam. Presumably, this is only for the ground portion of the exam? Do they use video or something in the plane. I'm...

Re: ADSB-B in and out

I' My Garmin GTR-200 is coupled to my Aera 660 GPS so it knows "where" I am and I can easily scroll through "nearest" airport frequencies. It's show me the 10 closest airports with their respective frequencies. Unicom or tower, ground, awos or atis, approach or departure, they'r...
