Sport Pilot Training Counts for Private Pilot Requirements

The final rule for several Part 61 changes is out. Included is the ability for sport pilot training time provided by sport instructors to count towards private pilot requirements and for a new ability for sport pilot instructors to provide basic instrument instruction provided they have an endorseme...

Re: Sport NPRM

The FAA gave an update on this at SNF. The part 61 rewrite is back on track and expected out within a year. It is expected to include a fix to the subpart K credit problem. I was told "8-10 weeks" from a source at a large Florida/Arizona aviation college. Given recent events, they aren't ...

That would be the 120 hour course for Light Sport Repairman with maintenance rating. https://www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx?SID=d83ed3dd8a03ef7105bfc03264160a2b&mc=true&node=se14.2.65_1107&rgn=div8 It allows you to perform maintenance and conditions on aircraft with an airworthiness cert...

Re: Randy Schlitter quote from General Aviation News

Isn't LSA pretty much the only sector of aviation where bringing a new plane to the market doesn't take tens of millions of dollars and years of knocking on various bureaucratic doors ? That's about to change with the Part 23 re-write. Its now to consensus commitees at ASTM to develop what the cons...

EASA also has a CS-VLA category that goes up to 700kg (~1540#). I think TAF people told me they are pursuing a MGW waiver as well.

New (to me) RV-12

I've been a flight instructor as my side-hustle for some years now. After a bunch of research (and numerous calls to Helen at Chesapeake Sport Pilot), I decided to take the plunge on a used S-LSA RV-12 to use as a trainer. My wife and I did the Carpenter's long course a few months ago as a "ner...

Re: Randy Schlitter quote from General Aviation News

If that's the case, the Sling 2 would fit into that nicely. Regardless of registration E-LSA or E-AB, it's design weight is engineered for a max TOGW of 1540 lbs. That extra 220 lbs. capacity, as a E-LSA, is beneficial over the E-AB in many ways. I heard the same that the FAA is planning to increas...

Are these just Sport DPEs, or is the intro class for all DPEs?

(22 would be a huge class of Sport DPEs...)

Re: LOA Survey for EVERYONE

Not sure how this fits the survey:

I once asked Legend Cub if they'd issue a LOA for a project AL-3 I was going to take on.

They said "We'll never issue a LOA for that. The only way that stays S-SLA is if we get it on our factory jig. We recommend you move it to E-LSA."

Re: Looking for a CFI - not that easy

Yes, unfortunately that's true. Several years ago, an ad-hoc coalition of fairly well known flight instructors (including me, Helen Woods, Rod Machado, and Paul Hamilton) petitioned the FAA on that very issue. We argued (convincingly, I thought) that in those areas of operation in which the Practic...

Re: X Plane 11 + Oculus Rift

An Oculus Rift showed up under the tree this year, then X-Plane 11 announced their VR port... its good. It's so good that I'm now working on 3D aircraft specific to my little flight school. If anyone has a small aircraft they want modelled, ping me. I've been rapidly trying to learn how to build air...

Re: Part Time CFI Looking for A Better Way

Better than what? How? What are you doing at this point? Have you approached the local FBO? An airport that requires an FBO, may not allow for independent instruction. Have you checked about insurance prices for this? That will give you a sobering factor for your cost/profits. Roll in hanger/tiedow...

Part Time CFI Looking for A Better Way

Hello Folks! I'm a part-time CFI (and active duty Air Force officer) looking to perhaps purchase a SLSA RV-12. I've already got a LSRM date at Rainbow. As I've bounced around the country, I've worked at numerous fligh schools. On my field now, the school just exists by virtue of airfield requirement...
