Re: Insurance rate shocker

Got my renewal in today. I am under AOPA/Assured Partners as an agent for AIG Aerospace. Renter's Policy: $500,000/$100,000 Liability $80,000 Hull $5,000 Deductible $817.00/year Not horrible, I hold just a private certificate and I'm working on the instrument rating. I rate shopped AVEMCO, which was...

Gear Issue Tecnam P92 Echo Super

Well, it appears the only light sport rental in this area is out of commission for a while. I went by the airport last week to put in some stick/rudder time and was surprised to see the Tecnam P92 I did most of my training in sitting stripped bare missing a tail. After talking with the CFI who was o...

Re: Can you turn a constant speed prop into a fixed pitch?

Actually, I was mistaken about the details of the ASTM useful load rule. It's a little worse than I thought - this from Dan Johnson: Currently that requirement is 430 pounds for fixedwing airplanes (land). That number was arrived at by allowing 190 pounds for each seat occupant (380 pounds for two-...

Re: Can you turn a constant speed prop into a fixed pitch?

OK maybe I am behind the times, but aren't there LSA's in development with the 912iS that actually use a governor to vary the pitch and single throttle control? I'm not saying they are currently LSA compliant, but I know it has been discussed and is being widely touted as safe and efficient....

Re: Mis-fueling accident

I'm a huge proponent of checking the tanks thoroughly before a flight. I've annoyed many a CFI or pilot waiting for the pump by insisting we tank up (when weight and balance allows) even if it's just an hour in the air, then sumping everything again to make sure there was no water. Unfortunately, mo...

I am beginning to sound like a broken record!

Well, it happened again, another accident at my home airport. This one was a double fatality with the son of one of the occupants surviving with serious injuries, link to the report is below for those who are interested. In this case I worked with one victim (Blake Cooper) for multiple years before ...

Re: Insurance rate shocker

I was talking with a few pilots on Facebook. In the past few months three airports in this area suffered losses from tornadoes: Pineville, Monroe, and now Bunkie is a total loss. They are expecting insurance for this area to skyrocket because of this. I'm not due for a while, I guess we shall see....

Re: Private Pilot flying under Sport Pilot Privledges

Can a private pilot flying under sport pilot privileges fly into controlled airspace without a sign-off? Yes, Ed, if he or she has previously operated in such airspace as a PP. The pilot is then grandfathered (or grandmothered?) There is no regulatory requirement that a private pilot must have prev...

Private Pilot flying under Sport Pilot Privledges

OK, got a question which came up recently. I was flying with a friend who's medical had expired but who had a valid flight review, drivers liscense and was operating as a sport pilot when PIC. We had a discussion on whether or not we could do a few touch and go's at the local class D airport if he w...

Re: The Corona Virus is putting a dent on my meet ups.

Its been quite the roller coaster ride here in Central Louisiana. At first our company doctor held an info session that basically said its not an issue, don't worry. Then it showed up in New Orleans and all hell broke loose, he quickly changed his tune. Our weather has been horrible and my schedule ...

Re: Educational Fair Use

This is getting pretty bad when an educator (who is doing the work pro-bono) is dragged into court to defend use of a photograph released into the public domain. While I can understand the premise of copyright, this seems like a stretch considering the exemptions as written for educational purposes....

Re: How do you explain Sport Pilot to a non-pilot/older pilot who doesn't know

If I want to sound like a smart @$$ (full disclosure: I am a private pilot): What the heck is a sport pilot? - A pilot of a small two seat aircraft capable of speeds faster than a 152 on par with a 172. Why didn't you go for private? - I like my money in my pocket and my aircraft built after the 197...

Re: SP VFR Rules
As others have said, be aware of the weather changes en-route. If the SCT deteriorates into BRK then OVC, you might lose visual contact with the ground, and be trapped in “VFR on top” (not good, as a Sport Pilot) or “VFR into IMC” (this could kill you).
Again good advise, set your p...
