Re: UAV Operators and Sport Pilot Certificates

Several of the recently approved Section 333 exemption applications I've seen are written so their UAS operators only need to pass an aeronautical knowledge test at that level - and don't need to go through the flight training portion. Now that makes way too much sense, so I expect the FAA to put a ...

Re: LSA Sting to be certified for IFR in IMC

Excellent point. I'm used to thinking in West Coast terms, where low visibility = clouds = frontal movement from the ocean = turbulence and general nastiness.

Haze, mist, stratus, etc. are a whole different (and tamer) animal.

Re: King school PC DVD course/ Cessna course

I've used the Cessna / King Private Pilot online course and found it to be top-notch. The Private course shares many of the videos with the Sport version (shot in a Cessna 162). I've also used the Cessna Instrument Rating course and really like it. I'm not sure what you mean when you say the Cessna ...

Re: Another hello from Socal and Baja

Gonzaga Bay is a beautiful place. Lucky dog!
I'm planning a Baja trip (flying) next year. We've been spending winters Pacific side for the past couple of years, but have to miss out this year because of work obligations. Ah well.

Re: LSA Sting to be certified for IFR in IMC

The idea of flying a 1320# aircraft in actual IMC is patently terrifying.

Re: Spin Training!

My reaction to that video was "They're doing WHAT?" followed by "Huh, that thing is pretty darn stable." Dangerous or not (and who knows if they had a BRS, personal parachutes, etc.), it certainly is a nice piece of advertising. If I have $750,000 to burn and am in the market for...

Re: Spin Training!

Great, glad it was helpful!

Two things:
1. Don't eat a big lunch right before going up.
2. Check out some spin recovery videos on YouTube. They really helped me in preparing for the sight picture.

Re: Spin Training!

One of these days I'll write up a comprehensive post about my CFI-Sport training. It's been a great process. I'm learning (or re-learning) a ton. It's amazing how much you're required to know as an instructor, and how little you actually practice on a daily basis while buzzing around as a private (o...

Spin Training!

I'm working on a CFI-Sport rating, and I got to do my 61.405 required spin training this afternoon. The LSA I fly isn't certified for spins so we went up in a 172. The instructor I flew with is the exact sort of guy who you want to fly with for something like this... cool, calm, and collected. If yo...

Re: Flying Again Instead of Taxi

We have a real nice 8000'x150' runway over at KEUG (though they usually stick us GA guys on the 6000'er). I've done stop-and-goes over there at night to satisfy night currency requirements. It would be fun to request a "series of three stop-and-goes" and just knock 'em all out on the big r...

Re: Got Checked Out In Remos GX

Since the original poster compared the Rotax with the O-200 in the 162... I flew the O-200 powered Skycatcher on a three-day trip on the hottest weekend of the summer. I took it up into the Cascades with surface temps of 100-105F. Did a couple max-performance departures (Vx, baby!) out of strips wit...

Re: Buying your own plane for training

Good on ya! Enjoy the ride!

I know a few people who have purchased airplanes before they started training (or very early on in their training). It works well for some, and not for others. Hope you're the 'some'!

Re: Checked Out In Remos GX

Thanks for the feedback. I've only flown a couple Rotax powered airplanes, but personally prefer the O-200 sound.

Re: Radio Questions

The 'monitor' feature essentially functions as a second radio. Frankly I think it's easier as you don't have to run everything through an audio panel. We have a similar setup here approaching out class Ds. Check ATIS as soon as you can receive it, then contact approach within 20-25nm, who then hands...

For all those flatlanders out there, this is what we're talking about:

Crescent City, CA. Half the field is VFR, half is LIFR.

*NEVER* trust ASOS/AWOS/ATIS near the coast!
