With Modified Jet Fuel, Planes Can't Explode

Interesting article. "In 2002, after the attacks, Caltech scientist, Julia Kornfield and colleagues began working on a polymer that could prevent jet fuel from being used as an explosive weapon. Their results are published in this week's issue of Science. Kornfield's team, including Ming-Hsin &...

Re: light sport IFR

For the most part, is IFR mostly an option for E-LSAs and E-AB? It doesn't seem like many manufacturers certify it for IFR except for the handful of models mentioned previously. I saw a Tecnam Sierra on sale with an IFR setup, but I'm guessing that's E-LSA.

Re: iPhone 6+

I'm not sure how accurate it is, but there's some reports of the 6+ bending: http://news.yahoo.com/video-shows-just-easy-bend-iphone-6-plus-205826517.html Are there any other features that you'd like to see in a 6/6+ sized package? A lot of those things (true GPS altitude) are pretty easy to impleme...

Re: Cell phone coverage in flight

There really is no definitive answer to your question. Exactly. I was curious about what you all have experienced. Not so much a steady statistical baseline, but antidotes in as many forms. I like to dabble with iOS/android/windows phone app development and I thought it might be fun to incorporate ...

Cell phone coverage in flight

I was looking at the theoretical ranges of cell towers, and it made me wonder what it was like in the real world (i.e. cross-country or shorter hops). Do you guys ever use your cell phones/data connection in flight? If so, how often do you run into "dead zones" or connection difficulties?

Re: News mentions gear-up landing

I'm aware of that aspect. I was surprised that he talked specifically about the "gear-up" survival rates. The gear causing less of a tumble if you hit at the right speed & angle while level. "Belly landings" are reminiscent of those stories from WWII. I wasn't sure if there w...

News mentions gear-up landing

I wasn't paying very close attention to the cable news channel, but I thought I heard something about one of their guests talking about what seems like an unconscious pilot over Cuba. The speaker (I think) said that the survival rate for a gear-up landing in the water was fairly good. Does anyone ha...

Were there any notable differences between the Bristell and the Astore in regards to flight characteristics and ease of maintenance?

Re: LSA Values Declining?

Now only if they had a sporty low wing... The c4 does sound fantastic, though. It's good to see some new & exciting aircraft in the certified marketplace. Tecnam vs. FD: stoke vs stick?

Re: LSA Values Declining?

Good point. I did consider used 172s (or 150s) once upon a time, actually. I probably would never own more than one aircraft during my lifetime, and it's kind of nice to get "the one" right up front. It might take me a longer time than most on here to save up to buy new, but it's worth it ...

Re: LSA Values Declining?

Personally I'm drawn to LSAs for the cheaper entry price, running costs, etc. LSAs make a lot of sense for commuting if you're just one person. The medical issue (for me) isn't that big of a deal, and if the LSA manufacturers came out with an upgraded model (speed, payload and especially safety), th...

Re: Flight Design "Safety Box" & possible LSA Implications

Is there another thread that discussed the crash worthiness of different airframes? I've been looking over the crash reports, but it's hard to decipher the results. The Flight Design safety cell does seem to hold up well. Some of the other designs resulted in a crumpled mess. It's impossible to beat...
