Re: Air Venture Cup Race

We had a great day of flying Young Eagles out here in Mitchell South Dakota today and the pre-race dinner. I had dinner with the gentleman flying the RV-12 against me in the race. He has a beautiful plane. I suspect he is a couple knots quicker and he weighs less for sure. I guess we shall see how t...

Re: Air Venture Cup Race

Got my race numbers applied this Saturday. I was doing some testing and was seeing 114-115kts TAS at 7500 ft over Denver this weekend too. I guess I will cross my fingers that the RV-12 I am racing against can't do 120 TAS :). We leave for Mitchell SD on Friday and race to OSH or rather Wassau and t...

Re: Air Venture Cup Race

I just got my official race number today. I will be "Race 18". It turns out there is one other LSA in the race, a RV-12. I find this funny coincidence since I am also building a RV-12. It should be a fun race with over 50 planes running it. Fingers crossed for good weather and a fast time....

Re: Sport first then Private

I earned my SP cert a little over 3 years ago. I flew about 360 hours and a few weeks ago took and passed my PP check ride. I enjoyed flying as a SP. I got my B/C/D endorsements and have flown my LSA all over the country in all kinds of air space. All the time burning very little gas and flying a pl...

RV-12 Expo

I am out here in Sunriver Oregon for the RV-12 Expo. What a great event. There are supposed to be over 150 builders, and S-LSA owners here. I think that is probably an accurate number. I attended a day long class on the Rotax 912 yesterday by Brian and Carol Carpenter from Rainbow Aviation. It was a...

Re: Foreflight with iPad mini sans ADS-B

I use my mini and a combination of Foreflight and the Jepp VFR app as a secondary flight display. I use a panel mounted Garmin 796 as my primary and it does a great job. It is nice however to use the iPad as a what if tool and backup moving map to the 796. My only complaint is the battery life seems...

Re: Used to be a Sport Pilot.. today I am a Private Pilot

Congrats to you too Craig. I still have the Gobosh and I am still building the RV-12, and am out here in Oregon for the RV-12 Expo. I still love LSA's. I did go by Vans Aircraft today for the factory tour and took a demo flight in the RV-14. That is one sweet plane and incredibly fast when you are u...

Re: Used to be a Sport Pilot.. today I am a Private Pilot

Keith I am 48. I got my medical this past January finally. I highly recommend Dr. Bruce Chien if you are looking at any SI related issues. Jack I am flying my Gobosh 700 day to day. The RV-12 is still not finished. I am trying to decide if I will finish it or build something larger and faster. I am ...

Used to be a Sport Pilot.. today I am a Private Pilot

I have been a sport pilot for the past 3 years. Today with almost 370 hours total time as a sport pilot, I took and passed my private pilot check ride. I am happy to be complete. I still will be flying my S-LSA but now I have some more options for flying at night, and higher altitudes (handy out her...

Re: Is 2,000 AGL Enough?

I live in Colorado Springs and my home airport is at 6800 feet to start out. We get DA of 10K on hot days in the summer. I will tell you that my LSA with a Rotax 912 100HP does pretty decently in those conditions. We do fly into the mountains but only after getting mountain training. We will not fly...

Re: 3rd class medical required for a 162

Yeah I suspected it to be incorrect Paul.. it seems that the whole insurance thing is you may eventually get what you asked for if you are persistent enough. As it is, I have two other named pilots on my plane without paying extra, but one is a CFII with over 3000 hours and the other is an ATP who f...

Re: 3rd class medical required for a 162

A couple data points. My insurance coverage on my S-LSA offers an open pilot policy, saying that any private pilot or above can fly my plane with my permission. I asked if this could be extended to any sport pilot, or a sport pilot with a certain number of hours in type. The insurance broker told me...

Re: RV12 FS @ Cecil County MD

I would say it depends.. I learned at a school in Denver that initially started out as a LSA only school. They did a decent business and kept people coming in who were interested in the newness and sportiness of the aircraft they flew. They were newish planes.. less than 3-4 years old. Yes they cost...

Air Venture Cup Race

Folks.. I don't know if you have heard of the Air Venture Cup race? It is a fun bit of cross country air racing with awards to the top three in each class at Wendt's on the Lake in Oshkosh. I have worked as a volunteer turn point person one year, and this year I will be entering my Gobosh S-LSA in t...

I flew something a little different for a Sport Pilot today

I was in Tampa for a conference and meetings this week and luckily wrapped a little early. I had been looking at going over to Preston aviation in Winter Haven for a while on the end of a business trip to try and fly the Boeing Stearman they have there. Today was finally that day. It was really cool...
