That being said -- anybody know of a super fast 2-seater with fixed gear/prop and 180hp? I'm thinking a vans rv-7/9 would be absolutely fantastic to fit the category and still do 200mph on decent fuel burn... ;) About ten years ago I got a ride in an RV 6 and have been in love them ever since. I th...

One of the things that bother me about the current certified LSA offerings is that it they are almost all from overseas. Hell even Cessna is building it’s now overpriced bird in China. If I was looking for a “high performance” LSA, I would be hard pressed to look past the RV-12. You get an American ...

I don’t think the FAA will really allow drivers license medicals any time soon but I would be really happy if they did. To me I am not really worried about passing my physical now but it would take a lot of the pressure off worrying about passing them every two years. If I can’t pass my first physic...

Well it looks to me that Cessna will have a winner with the 162 if for no other reason that they have agreements with flight schools and those 152’s are getting old. It should benefit the sport pilot program as I wouldn’t think too many schools would turn down sport pilot students and many of those ...

I am in somewhat of the same boat you are in only I have not started my flight training yet. The bucket list thing is kind of funny because I think for many of us that is basically what it is. I think most all of us have always wanted to fly but life tends to get in the way. I turned 44 a couple of ...

I am sure there will be a glut of high time engines here in a few years. I think that will be great for the homebuilt guys. Let’s face it, not many years ago two strokes, with 300 hour engines, were the norm. I know I would rather take my chances with a high time 912, which I was monitoring closely....

Thanks for the information. I guess that is pretty much what I feared it was going to be. I was visiting a guy who is building a kitfox and that was pretty much the advice he was given also. When the engine was about done just pull it out and sell it. I just was wondering as I saw an ad on Barnstorm...

I was in Tracy the other day and almost stopped by the airport there. It is really too far to go though. I see they have a Skylark there for $69 but I am sure that is without fuel. Two of the places I listed were in Lodi too so not too far from Tracy.

OK, that's the cheapest one. What about more expensive places? Well I only know of three places around the Elk Grove/Sacramento area that rent. One place has a Sting Sport for $85. There is another place that has a Sport Star for $90-100. I know for flight training it is $90 but I am not sure what ...

Jack I agree that flying can be a lot more affordable that most people think. You are correct that the lack of rentable LSA’s is a big drawback right now in most places. I was very excited about the sport pilot program until I sat back and really started to figure out how all this was going to work ...

Cost to overhaul a 912?

Here is a question maybe some of you Rotax mechanics can answer, as I seem to be getting many different answers reading online. I was wondering about what it would cost to overhaul a 912ul or a 912uls. I know this can vary greatly but I was curious about what to expect for a major. I know most of th...

As SSDriver pointed out, for the vast majority of potential new pilots, 110-130k is way over the top for what is essentially a very nice toy. The problem is now, while the sport pilot license is much cheaper and easier to get, for most of us when we price it out it is actually more expensive. I woul...

If the FAA is anything like the Government agencies I am used to dealing with I would guess this will be a long time coming but I can see why the LAMA would not be that happy about it. I think it will just about kill the industry, at least as the present business model is set up. I like the idea of ...

I totally agree flyingeyes. Really the cost of an instructor is not much in the total picture. More flight training can only be a good thing to help you become a better pilot. In my area instructor can be had for between $30-45 an hour pretty easily. My problem is the almost total lack of LSA qualif...

Jack I was aware that a AB airplane could not be used commercially or rented but I don't think that would ever be a problem for me. I was considering buying an airplane to train in. It would be harder if I bought a plane such as a Kitfox because very few CFI's would be qualified. One of the guys on ...
