Has Dan Johnson finally gone off his rocker?

Was reading this article on Bydanjohnson.com on the new Contiental CD-170 in the Tecnam P2010. https://www.bydanjohnson.com/continentals-new-jet-a-engine-sets-a-new-course-for-the-big-powerplant-producer/ When I saw this section: LSA and kit-built owners may also want to visit Continental’s Titan en...

Re: Texas Aircraft "Colt" LSA

So while at Oshkosh last week I spoke with Ken Krueger the designer of the Vashon Ranger he implied that a weight change was closer than one would think, hinting at the end of this year, and at that time they would raise the weight to 1,450 lbs even though the Ranger has been tested to 1,500 pounds....

Re: Texas Aircraft "Colt" LSA

Since the Merlin will never see the light of day any comparisons to it are moot.

To quote Monty Python “This Merlin is dead, it is an x-Merlin”.

Re: Piper 100 vs Vashon Ranger

Let me clarify. The Piper 100 is a 3 seat airplane designed exclusively for the flight school environment and will only be sold to flight schools. The third seat is in the middle and is for an observer or second student pilot. The Piper 100 is available as an IFR trainer with a Garmin GTX-375 and Ga...

Re: Piper 100 vs Vashon Ranger

John Torode founder of Dynon and Vashon is an avid floatplane pilot and has publicly stated his intention to put the Ranger on floats. I spoke with the GM of Vashon at SnF and he indicated that Ranger is currently tested to 1,433 lbs in anticipation of adding floats. He also indicated that if the ma...

Update on LSA limits from Oshkosh

I attended Oshkosh from Thursday to Saturday this year. During the week there had been a meeting between representatives of the FAA and the principals of some of the US based LSA manufacturers. I spoke with three of the CEO's and all where optimistic coming out of this meeting. From what I understan...

Re: Jack Pelton comments on LSA weight restrictions

I am going to go out on a limb here and postulate that the revised S-LSA standard may look similar to the EASA CS-VLA standard, that is 750 Kilogram (1,563 lbs) maximum weight, single spark or compression ignition engine, 2 seats, Day VFR and Stall speed less than 45 knots. There is no mention in CS...

Re: Jack Pelton comments on LSA weight restrictions

I once owned several Diamond DA40s that had a Gross Weight Modification raising the take off weight (but not the landing weight) by about 100 pounds. For planes that did not ship from the factory with this modification Diamond made available a kit that could be retroactively installed to certain mod...

Jack Pelton comments on LSA weight restrictions

https://www.avweb.com/avwebflash/news/LSA-Weight-Restrictions-Changing-231209-1.html According to this article in AVweb still two years away. Anybody got any insight on what the new limits will be? Even a modest increase of a 150 lbs would definitely help sales of heavier empty weight planes like t...

Re: Can convert LSA to E-LSA to fly faster than 120 kts.?

Turns out the European manufacturer has clarified the issue for me. You can order the plane two ways from their factory: 1) as an S-LSA that is limited to 120 Its and 2) as an Experimental Exhibition Racing with a constant speed prop that can exceed 120Kt which also means you need to be a private pi...

S-LSA converted to E-LSA

Seeking advice from those of you who have taken your S-LSA to E-LSA. If you purchase a S-LSA aircraft and then transition it into the E-LSA category can you then make changes to the aircraft that takes it beyond S-LSA regulations? Example would be changing to a prop that causes the aircraft to excee...

Re: AVweb Video on Vashon Ranger + Aviation Consumer Article

I have been invited to test fit the Vashon Ranger the next time I am in the Pacific North West by Amy their head of Marketing. There was no discussion of a required $200 charge. Perhaps because they know that I live in the North East and if I travel to Paine Field in Everett to see and test fly the ...
