Re: Bounced landings

Too much speed and energy on touchdown is the typical bounce scenario. I was taught old school, seldom flew aircraft with flaps, and always came in hot to make the runway if the engine failed (had 5 in my 50+ years of flying). I would typically turn final then slip the aircraft down to 15-20 feet of...

Re: G3X cross country student

Time have changed.... Did my solo cross country (Riverside Ca to Phoenix Az) with sectionals, stopwatch, a trusty E6, and Narco Mark 3 radio. Relied on navigation skills, check points, and knowledge. All the new avionics are great until they fail or you fly into one of the government test areas wher...

Re: Cost of maintenance of a C-162

My late father bought a new 162 and enjoyed its performance and ease of ingress and egress at his age (he was 91 when he purchased it). The 162 spent months undergoing warranty repair, I.e. leading edge skin replacement, intercom breakdown, broken hinges, warped doors, etc. His main complaint was th...

Re: How can I make an informed decision choosing between similar engines?

Over my 50+ years of flying, I have been behind Continentals, Franklins, Lycomings (including the GO-145), Volkswagens, Corvairs, P&W, Jacobs, Kinners, Rangers, Menascos, 36 HP Aeronicas, Hirth, Cuyuna, taxied a LeRhone (owner wanted me to get the full Castor Oil and tail-skid experience), and R...

Re: Nose Wheel Tie-Down

Greetings all... when I had my Remos, I was forced to tie down outside for 60 days while hangars were being rehabbed. Parking outside during Santa Ana winds presented a challenge due to the typical LSA flimsy nose gear (thanks Paul). I ended up constructing a tripod to bolt to the tail skid area and...

Re: Any near miss stories?

Stan, Don's dad was great. I wanna be Ray Stits when I grow up! Paul, Great seeing you are still active and have a sense of humor. Ray has been gone for 5 years now, and I still receive questions on his designs in my email. I donated all of the original prints to Smithsonian last year, a place to p...

Re: Any near miss stories?

Stan,
Probably met you in the mid 60’s at the shop. It was an interesting life and experience.
Paul,
My recommendation - don’t grow up.

Re: Any near miss stories?

Interesting subject. In my 50+ years of flying and growing up on Flabob Airport, I have witnessed approximately 20 accidents and 5 mid air collisions at Flabob and surrounding airports. Of the 5 mid air collisions, 4 were due to pilots with their heads buried in the cockpit paying more attention to ...

Paul,

Re: Airplane selection opinions

Thinking of the various aircraft to fill your need and price range, one comes to mind - the Shinn 2150 ( Morrisey, Varga) designed in the late 50’s, all metal, low wing, tri gear, two place tandem, good flying utility bird. There are a few for sale usually. Good performer with later production which...

Re: saf-air oil drain

I have used a Curtis quick drain valve for the past 7 years with no problem on my Remos. Due to configuration, use of standard drain plug slops oil on mount and firewall. Quick drain keep job clean and allow me to place vinyl tube from drain to a one gallon jug. Everybody has their own preference. Don

Nice... curious about performance with the high aspect ratio wing. Impressive.
