Re: Have You Ever Considered Quitting Flying

I quit when I had my daughter. There's an immense challenge in getting a license and it changes you as a person. I'm now able to multi-task at work better than I ever have before. And I'm able to deal with short-term stress much better than ever before. What made it easy to shelve flying was a limit...

Re: Bloomberg Video & Article on ICON A5 in NYC

I have a soft spot for the A5. I read about it in a Gizmodo article, and one week later I was at Chesapeake Sport Pilot taking a discovery flight. Here I am a Light Sport Pilot. I know its not the smartest LSA purchase out there. Lots of other planes have much better value. But like the iPhone I bel...

Re: I'm 63 today~the future of Gen Aviation

I got involved in flying at age 27 with no elements in my life predisposing me to take up the hobby.

What got me to take a discovery flight was seeing the Icon A5 shown on a gadget website I frequent.
What got me to continue taking lessons was an instructor who embraced technology.

Re: Icon, the good the bad and the ugly.

The weight restriction on light sport aircraft is so arbitrary. If they're able to create a spin resistant airframe that still fits within all of the LSA performance requirements then who cares how much it weighs?

It is interesting that emergency procedures training doesn't even incorporate the BRS at most flight schools. I personally have never even pulled the pin out of the BRS on the plane I fly.

It costs something like $10,000 which is not covered by most insurance to pull the chute. Virtually none of the emergency procedure practice I did ever even paid attention to the chute - they didn't want you to pull it. It was an absolute last resort and I'll bet most flight schools teach it the exa...

Congratulations! Keep flying!

It's amazing how your skills can atrophy if you go a month without getting in the air.

The best rental insurance I found was the AOPA Insurance Group. It's only like $179/year with a 10% renewal discount.

The Icon A5 is the best thing that's happened to aviation recruitment. Possibly second only to the introduction of the Light Sport license. Let's face it, general aviation has an 'older person' feel to it. When many people are flying around in orange planes from the 60's and 70's, and the cost is so...

I am bumping this post because I believe Chesapeake Sport Pilot got their SeaRey up and running recently.

Helen - how is the new plane? What's the maintenance like?

I did a fair amount of research on this. It seems that for every positive experience, there are at least seven negative experiences. My conclusion was that it's generally a very bad method that pilots use to afford to own an airplane. A plane share or flying club are better solutions for ownership i...
