Re: new member from CA
Welcome! It sounds like you are in a good place if you have a local training organization that is Light Sport friendly and has certified aircraft for rent as well. Best of luck on your pilot journey!

Re: Using autopilot in airspace while under ATC control
I usually just plotted my course in ForeFlight, set my Autopilot to “straight and level” and then dialed in my heading and altitude changes as desired. To me it offers more flexibility than predetermined nav way-points and could adjust easily to ATC requests and/or traffic situations. Hand fly for f...

Re: Aircraft takeoff performance
I have so far operated at fields that are not in anyway pushing the limits. The shortest is about 2500 ft and low elevation. Maybe someday I'll want to do a 2000 ft runway at a much higher elevation and a hot day. How would I know if I am taking a big risk? Short answer: Look for an airport in the ...

Re: Aircraft takeoff performance
Good question! Here are two real-world examples that I experienced with my SportCruiser: 1) Cold Winter day, +/- 1,300’ MSL: The plane would almost be in the air by the time my throttle hit the full power stop. 2) Hot, humid, Summer day in Florida, 0’ MSL: Go to full throttle, wait about 4 to 6 seco...

Re: Vans aircraft is going out of business ?
Wow! Sounds like they are in desperate need of restructuring. Perhaps they can learn something from the CubCrafters business model?

Re: Had an interesting experience with flight following today
Wow! Quite an interesting and unique experience! That was a pretty comprehensive response. Glad you are OK.
My experience with flight following is that they are usually waaay behind the info that is provided by ADS-B, especially for traffic alerts.

Re: Ground school
I agree with chicagorandy. Since you are 80% done with the Private Pilot Ground school, finish that course. You shouldn’t be tested on night flying. Make sure that you are well aware of the Sport Pilot limitations and special endorsements… e.g. Weight, speed, stall speed, altitude, controlled airspa...

Re: Take action! MOSAIC Comment period
I don't think anyone here is suggesting that. Someone posted a person's comment from those submitted to the FAA already. It seems that person is against sport pilots. Understood. I’m tired of the GA community putting down Sport Pilots. Meanwhile most of them they fly these ancient and very boring a...

No. Absolutely not! There are plenty of Sport Pilot...
