I put very little pressure on the current system and I pay no fees. If I look to Europe I see pilots like me pay a lot. I fear change that could end up with me paying a lot.
You have to pay a fee to land at my home airport now.

Re: Icon Crash--Up a Box Canyon with No Way Out
I don't see this as a float plane issue. The thought of entering a canyon when I'm cruising around at 50 some knots really bothers me.
I canyon fly 3 days a week and even at 13,000' I want my AI to be reading 95 knots, spare energy can be useful for exiting a canyon in an emergency.

I don't know, I'll have to pay attention next landing and see what cue I am now using.Wm.Ince wrote:How sooner?CharlieTango wrote:. . . "have gone back to a more gradual, less rushed round out that starts sooner." . . .

Re: Flare and Touchdown
I used to feel a need to play chicken with the ground in my CTSW but have gone back to a more gradual, less rushed round out that starts sooner.
With 30* and idle its a steep approach, add in speed at @ 1.3 and they are mostly short / soft with full aft stick.

Re: Question to Sting owners ( cruise )
The altitude that provides best performance is right around 7,500' DA. Higher and power is lost due to lack of O2 and lower speed is lost due to drag.

Re: Full Flaps
My first plane and my current plane both had/have flaperons. I have always used full or 30 degree flaps for landings. I get that roll authority diminishes with higher flaperon settings but that is true with higher flap settings as well. Nothing new because we have flaperons. It's not a big deal beca...

Lee side - front range - downdrafts
This cloud depicts the flow. The downdraft zone can be after crossing the last ridge. Right of frame is a highway 5,000' below and then high plains. (Where Clint Eastwood filmed 'High Plains Drifter') The flow is from left to right or west to east. https://scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31.0-8/1709...

Approaching Mammoth Yosemite Airport from the southeast I like to fly over McGee Mountain. Airport is in the right of the frame.

Re: Steve Fossett's final view - its what sucked him in.
He was flying from right to left and according to a witness unable to penetrate the wind. I think he hit the wall above the spot where the shoreline is a flat line. The door to his cabin remained latched yet his possessions were found in the flat area causing some to assume he made it that far where...

Re: Engine quit today
Unless you're right above the airport, maximum time may be worthless. Suppose your maximum "dwell" time is at 35 knots and you're facing a 35 knot headwind to the airport? Good luck. Descending above the field is only one place I might choose minimum sink speed. Here's a scenario: Its a s...

Re: Engine quit today
You are confusing minimum sink and best glide. They are not 2 versions of the same thing. Best glide is best l/d ratio and min sink is min vert speed. What I am talking about is maximum distance over the ground before running out of altitude to make a landing, regardless of sink rate. In an engine ...

Re: Engine quit today
BTW, my testing seems to show I get better glide from 78kt and -6° flaps than the POH best glide of 63kt at 15° flaps. That does not surprise me, Andy. In glider training I was taught there are really two "best glide" speeds. One maximizes the time aloft, and the other maximizes distance ...
