I have decided to get my sport pilot's license and I live around Sacramento. I have talked to a couple of instructors and I plan on talking to a couple of more before I make my decision. Anyone with any information about the Sacramento area would be great.
Also any advice about training in general would be great also. About 13 or 14 years ago I went through a ultralight training program and flew a Rans 12 some. I have also solo'd a 150 when I was training for my PP. I never ended up getting the PP and had pretty much put flying on the the back burner the last 12 years.
Most likely I wll buy a plane after I complete my training. My plan now is for a Kitfox or something like a Rans 6. Mostly I am looking for a fairly affordable hours builder. I do realize that if I decide to do a tailwheel it will take an endorsement and more training.
Right now I am trying to decide just what type of training I should take. I have talked to one that was pretty much set up like a regular flight school. Another guy is pretty much just a plane and a hanger. Both fly similar type low wing airplanes. One pretty much insists on ground school and the other has training material but says I should just do it on my own. I have also contacted on instructor, but have not had a chance to meet him, who flies off a grass strip in a Rans 6.
I guess I am just looking for opinons on what was the easiest way for people to learn. My opinion is I should just probably go with who I feel most comfortable with. Any questions I should be asking my instructors before decide who to work with?

Terry Miller at Lodi:

He just got a friend of mine through his Light Sport Aircraft certificate. Send me an email at jstewart@jkmicro.com if you'd like more specific information about the other Light Sport instructors around the area. I have some more opinions but would rather not express them in a public forum. |

Thanks Jim
I went to visit Terry a couple of weeks ago and was very impressed. He was right at the top of my list but good to hear someone else say it. The added bonus for me is Lodi is the closest training center to my house. |
