Sad... Fatal LSA crash at my "home base" airport this weekend. Eyewitnesses describe something like a takeoff stall. Not clear if the engine failure was involved.

| Two CZAW crashes in as many weeks. The previous one was a Piper Sport. What's going on? |

The weather's turning nice, and people are flying again. Sadly, flying season = accident season. |

"The weather's turning nice, and people are flying again."
And that doesn't mean they are current... |

| That's very disturbing photo. A good reminder it may look like a toy but it reacts like a real plane. That Fla crash is a real head scratcher as the initial facts don't point to anything obvious. Something went wrong very quickly at cruise altitude, in good weather about 1/2 hour after takeoff. As an owner of a Piper Sport I hope a cause can be determined. It's a great plane and there are many in service here and in Europe with no design accident trends. Like any light sport they don't have a lot of mass and will lose airspeed quickly if you pitch it up abruptly. That may not be the cause in this accident but it sure reminds me not to get casual in my routine. |

| The witnesses claim an unusually high pitch attitude. I wonder why. On Cherokee I would have trouble fighting a full nose-up trim, but I think I could overcome it if I were ready for it an used both arms. In Remos, it a piece of cake, the stick force is very light and I can overcome full trim with one hand. Seats in SportCruiser are fixed, so no seat track issue. Puzzling. |

BTW the pilot age was reported as 77...
NTSB has not published the determination yet. Unless there's an obvious mechanical/flight controls malfunction I suspect this one will turn out with "unknown reason"....
Strange feeling - I remember exchanging some e-mails with the gentlemen (retired UW literature professor) about possible partnership in his Cruiser... Don't know about SportCruiser, but Sierra I fly is buffeting like crazy, banging my head on a canopy long before entering full-blown power-on "takeoff" stall - this should've woken up anybody. Hard to explain. Will have to wait on NTSB conclusions. |

| At the age of 77 keep in mind its possible that it could have been a health issue as well. We may never know though. Hate to see it. |
