No real details yet but this seems very strange. The PiperSport has a chute but perhaps it didn't work? The pilot was also a skydiver. Did he figure the descent rate was such he could ride it down? And why throw out the clothes -- maybe to change the CG to get out of unrecoverable spin? Lot's of quesions that are unlikely to get answered.
Hopefully this was a Dynon and Garmin GPS equipped plane and the NTSB can dump the data. Might be able to figure out what happened. |

Unless Piper/SportCruiser came out with a night lighting kit installed on that plane, what was the pilot doing flying a VFR day aircraft at night?
The pilot reportedly was a CFI with parachute experience... but it must have been really difficult to bail out of a low-wing canopy plane like the PiperSport. Very unusual crash.
Very sad and unfortunate, of course.
Condolences to all who were close with the young pilot. |

According to a SportCruiser post, preliminary reports say the plane came apart in the air. Perhaps a botched spin recovery?

The sportcruiser I fly is set up for day/nt. vfr: nav, cabin, landing, nav. lights etc. The owner, a PP, flies it night vfr.

No less than EADS is using a CriCri for an electic engine test bed.
