Although they seem a good potential source of income, I realize that paid "sightseeing" flights are not authorized in the LSA world.
What are the legalities of so-called "discovery" flights? Are they exclusively for potential flight training candidates? |

My take: if someone who gets a discovery flight could possibly mistake it for a sightseeing trip the CFI is doing students a major disservice. It's an instructional flight with a student who may not continue their lessons.
Legally and actually it is .5 (+/-) hours of dual instruction. What you do with that is up to you as an instructor but you should be giving a lesson. In my case the CFI actually talked me through the entire takeoff (the first takeoff I ever experienced in a light plane was with me manipulating the controls) and flying to a practice area, turns, and returning to the airport. He demonstrated some things and landed the plane but for the most part I was so focused on the flying we could've been flying over the Great Pyramid of Giza, Great Wall of China, and 700 dancing girls and I doubt I'd have realized they were down there. |
