I know there are many airports that have disappeared from Long Island. In fact some refer to LI as the Cradle of Aviationh. But I never knew that we had a Naval Air Station in Bayshore between 1916-1919.
The Bayshore Historical Society currently has an exhitbit.
Featured are photos of:
Hydroplanes that scouted for Geram U-boats during WW1
Some of the 1000 pilots trained there
the construction of the 46 buildings
a letter from the stations first commander.
It is open on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Admission is free but donations are appreciated. For information call 631-665-1707 http://www.bayshorehistoricalsociety.org/ |
