Most all my flying experience is 172/182.
I usually end up flying myself or one passenger.
People tell me I will not like being bounced around
in a light sport after flying a 182.
I have demoed several light sports but mostly under ideal
conditions. What do you guys think?

| Jake, I find myself in much of the same situation. Most of my flights have either been solo or with one other person, so LSA is looking very attractive to me. I seldom fly IFR and have no desire for it anymore. If I can only reduce my 'gross weight' I think LSA might just be the answer for me. I'm looking into the PiperSport right now. |

| Jake, 5 years ago I was also in the same situation, and after 4 1/2 years of SLSA ownership (Tecnam Bravo), I sort of wish I had my Skylane back. You really have to take the Light Sport name seriously - these things do get bounced around more than heavier planes, and you do have to choose your day and time-of-day when you want to fly. A summer's mid-day here in the mid-west does not make for pleasant flying! Also, the Rotax engine is a satisfactory power-plant, but just try to find someone authorized (by Rotax) to work on it. I understand you can't even change your own oil unless you've gotten some kind of certification from Rotax. Further, the rules about making changes to your SLSA are a nuisance - any change whatsoever requires approval by the manufacturer, even if you're having a TSOed item installed by an FAA approved shop. My advise is if a person has a private pilot's license and has no problem with getting a medical, buy a good used 172 and forget about LSAs. |

I own a C172 and have flown LSA's in turbulent conditions and didn't see much difference. It all comes down to wing loading. While you may only carry yourself and one other person in a 172 you don't have to worry about weight or cargo space. The ability to carry golf clubs is a must for me. If I ever sell the 172 and buy a LSA it would probably be a Jabiru. The Jabiru has a direct drive air cooled engine, more HP than a Rotax , lots of cargo space and will actually cruise at 120 kts. |
