O you must mean the one where a police officer can check to see if you are in the country legally...
I still have a bit of trouble with someone who was brought into the US by his parents when he was an infant, who grew up here, went to school here, has a job, pays taxes, maybe started a business and employs others who pay taxes, got married, has kids, owns his house, and joined the PTA, being considered a criminal, just because his parents didn't file the right paperwork 30 years ago. Illegal is a broad broom that can sweep away too many good Americans.
But, that's not about flying. Sorry for getting sucked into a thread diversion. |

The wind has grounded me about 3 times already, but recently made it up to do the 2 hour cross country.
Have new instructor again, other one went to work for outfit taking people to grand canyon.
This fellow just got his CFI last month, but he's ok,knows his stuff, pleasant to fly with but a bit confused on how to teach, guess I'm one of his first victims. He wants to get me to solo, man didn't expect that, but needs his chief CFI to go up with me to see if I'm ready. Actually the chief is a pretty smooth teacher, he took me on the discovery flight and had me land the plane smoothly just using his voice.
Just my two cents about arizona law, bad idea, since it puts an onus on the police, as if they didn't have enough to do, and is simply a band aid approach, like trying to catch the horse after being let out of the barn years ago.
Nothing mentioned up here in Vegas, sort of a free society kind of thing, run by the market, no taxes, so no real money spent on anyone. Anyway, state capital is on Las Vegas boulevard, i.e., casino industry. If all illegals were deported from here, the city would simply stop, the restaurants and hotels would not be manned as no one would be around to do the "grunt" work that needs to be done behind the scenes, not enough legals here to work the huge casino machine.
Also, tons of students here in limbo, born in mexico, came as toddlers and lived their whole lives here, know nothing about mexico. Not practical to deport them, they are essentially Americans without papers. Same situation I'm sure in Arizona and eslewhere.
Besides, more importantly, my favorite brick oven pizza joint is manned by mexican pizza makers, if they go, I'm sunk, may as well leave town.

hope to solo some year

Brian,
Today (tues, 11th), with even more wind, Roger flew from Tucson to Columbia CA in his CT! (for the CT fly-in) Nasty winds up to 70+ across areas of Southwest. 'Closed Interstate for 40 miles between Flagstaff and Winslow for hours. He reported a 35-40 kt headwind, but pretty smooth.
Two weeks ago, I flew from Rocky Point, Mex. to Yuma in the CT with winds 25-30 on the ground and 40kt headwind. It sucks when you look down and see some cars going faster than you!

I don't require 30-40kt headwinds to see that in my "Coupe. :D Usually (fortunately) I don't "need" to get anywhere fast - and am able to enjoy the flying, no matter the speed. |

'Roger that - any day flying, even slow, beats a day with no flying...
The wife and I made an agreement when we got the plane: We never take off under pressure to "get" anywhere |

Winds aloft and winds at ground level are two different issues. The only time I worry about high winds aloft is with high terrain that will produce turbulence. I've been up in close to 60 knot winds aloft, where it was a smooth ride. 40 knots on the nose definitely sucks, but 50 knots on the tail is awesome.
High winds on the ground is another story. Good wind correction techniques are needed, and be very cautious with low level wind shear. |

doesn't the CT have a headwind max component. I remember several years ago seeing that. I might be wrong (it has been a few years). I wasn't sure why they put in a max component.
I flew a Savannah VG with strong winds aloft. I was able to vertically ascend/descend over a house in a 2,000 foot altitude range. Then, i was able to go 5kts backwards (albeit it wasn't very straigh backwards...more of a drifting away from my mark).
We are fortunate not to have to worry about mountain waves. |

Definitely not LSA, but I watched Sean Tucker practice his routine last weekend at Warrenton Va. Wind was almost straight down the runway, something like 20G30. He was getting blown all over the place, and it didn't seem to bother him a bit. Pointing the plane straight up resulted in a very non-vertical assent. He could just hang on the prop at about a 45 degree angle pointing into the wind. He does this thing with a flat turn, like a turn-about-a-point, but with no bank. Truely strange looking with all that wind. If you ever get a chance, go see him.
